Cinnafilm Dark Energy Used in Restrepo

Published: January 25th 2011

Cinnafilm Dark Energy was used in Restrepo, the Academy Award winning film.

The Academy Award finalists were announced and Restrepo, a documentary by Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington, was nominated for Best Documentary Feature. Restrepo tells the story about a 15-man outpost (named Restrepo) that was considered one of the most dangerous positions in Afghanistan.

This powerful story was picture finished at Goldcrest by award winning colorist, John Dowdell. John utilized many Cinnafilm Dark Energy grain, noise reduction, and format conversion tools to make the images of Restrepo “Jump off the screen,” as proclaimed by executive producer Nick Quested when it was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. At Sundance, Restrepo won the Documentary Award for best documentary.

Cinnafilm CEO Lance Maurer stated, “I think we are most proud of our technology when it is used to help tell an exceptional story. Restrepo gives audiences the ability to understand the true emotions and situations of modern warfare in a very real way. We couldn’t be happier that our technology was one of the brushes the artists used to bring this story to the world – being a part of this film is truly an honor.”
